What is chive underground?

Chives are a type of herb that belong to the onion family. They are commonly grown for their leaves, which have a mild, onion-like flavor and are often used fresh or dried as a seasoning in various dishes. Chives typically grow to be about a foot tall, with long, slender leaves and small purple or white flowers that bloom in the spring and summer.

Like other onion plants, chives grow from bulbs or underground stems called rhizomes. These underground parts allow the plant to survive through harsh winters or periods of drought, and also enable new plants to grow from the same root system year after year. Chives are generally easy to grow and prefer well-drained soil and full sun to partial shade. They can be propagated from seed or by dividing existing plants, and are a popular herb for home gardeners and commercial growers alike.
